“We began construction of our new home in the fall of 2012. It was something my wife Sara and I had been planning and looking forward to for quite some time. We chose to use Bucher Construction to be the general contractor for the project. “Bucher Construction built a custom home for us in Valparaiso, Indiana. Bucher is a family-owned company, started by the father, Dean, and operated by his sons Dan and Bryan. We interviewed other high-end builders in the area, and chose Bucher because they had an excellent, organized team at the interview, were very courteous and flexible in helping us to design every aspect of our home, and then designing the home for us, including detailed architectural concepts and final plans. We lived over five hours away, so much of the daily details had to be developed and coordinated from afar. The Buchers have an excellent computerized communication program that uses a numerical system to assign an identifier to every aspect of the build, from stair railing to flooring to cabinet knobs. Within the system, we could write questions, receive comments, provide direction, and have a written record of each exchange. We had a specific, secure location in Bucher’s system, and communicated decisions on an almost-daily basis as needed. The Buchers were outstanding, helping in a very timely manner to make decisions, and to coordinate with suppliers for items such as flooring, cabinetry, landscaping, paint choices, trim choices, a variety of added custom features, and the multitude of other decisions needed. We did not have the option to pick the builder of our first home because he owned the lot. Having had a very unhappy building experience, we were determined to pick a builder who was everything the previous builder wasn’t.

To start the process, we visited several homes of other builders in various stages of construction. It was interesting to note the absence of reinforcement in the flooring, the amount of wood shavings and litter in others. It was the lack of quality materials being used and the attention to details that made us uncomfortable.

When we went through all of Bucher’s homes, especially impressive was the attention to details in the building process and the final product. The floor joists were doubled or tripled in areas that needed extra support. The amount of steel beams that were used in the basement was impressive with each home. Each of the homes, no matter what stage of building it was in, had been swept and was tidy. It became apparent that all the disappointments we had experienced with our first builder, would not be an issue in choosing Bucher Construction. We went to the same church as Bryan, Dan & Dean and we knew they shared the same core values that we did.

During the building process, we were always welcome to visit whenever it was convenient for us and we did so often. We were well informed of the progress and always kept in the loop during construction. The whole process went smoothly and all promises were kept.
